Afzal Hossain, Gp Capt Md BAF
This paper discusses ideas and concepts of information and communications technologies (ICT) in ecological sustainability. It provides a preliminary idea about Green IT. The paper endeavors to create awareness among the IT professionals and entrepreneurs for Green IT, and suggests for the actions that they and their organizations should undertake. The paper analyses a few case studies and working papers pertaining to the subject and shows that most IT professionals are concerned about climate change and recognize the dual role of IT in causing and resolving environmental sustainability problems. More than 70% of IT professionals and entrepreneurs believe that they can play significant roles in leading Green IT changes. An equal percentage believe that Green IT should be a core part of an organization’s overall environmental sustainability strategy and IT management should take the responsibility for reducing IT’s environmental footprint. Only about 30% of respondents are aware of ICT policy. IT professionals are either sceptical or unaware of their organization’s commitment to Green IT. However, a minority of organizations are taking initial steps in terms of putting green IT on their agenda, allocating budget and implementing Green IT projects.

Wahidul Islam, Lieutenant Colonel Md; A.J. Khan, Dr. Prof.
In this study, investigations were undertaken to analyze the feasibility of using prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) made of natural fibre like jute in accelerating the consolidation process of soft soil under surcharge. To do it, soft soil parameters consisting of index properties, shear strength properties and consolidation parameters of Mirpur (Dhaka) Clay have been investigated. Mechanical properties of jute filter fabric have been adopted from the work of Mohy (2005). Soil settlement has been observed for 4 weeks without the use of vertical drains and also with the use of synthetic and jute PVD. It is seen from the test results that jute PVD clearly fulfills almost all the requirements set by Roads &amp; Highways Department of Bangladesh. Cost feasibility analysis shows that synthetic PVD is two times costlier than jute PVD.

<summary type="text">EFFECT OF BORE STROKE RATIOS ON OVERALL FRICTION MODEL OF SI ENGINE
Mizanuzzaman, Major Md.
Bore Stroke ratios are considered one of the most significant impact on friction of SI engine. This paper outlines a method or model which provides the engine designer with an estimation of overall friction mean effective pressure due to change of bore stroke ratios in spark-ignition internal combustion engines. The general effect of overall friction on engine performance was examined during normal working conditions. A parametric study was performed covering wide range of dependent variables such as engine speed, change of bore stroke ratios with and without changing engine volume. Different bore stroke ratios are used for three different cylinder condition / model, such as, at constant volume, at variable bore and volume (constant stroke), and lastly at variable stroke and volume (constant bore). Various average friction coefficients are used considering oil viscosity property, film thickness, temperature effect and roughness of the surface. At low speed with lower bore stroke ratio and at high speed with higher bore stroke ratio, constant bore model gives less friction irrespective of compression ratio. At low speed, most of the friction is due to the piston rings, and at higher speeds, the majority of the friction is from the piston skirt.

<summary type="text">JET NOISE MENACE: A REVIEW
Abdus Salam (BAF), Gp Capt; Nc Chattopadhyay (IAF), Gp.Capt.; Rumi, Jalal Uddin; Eunus, H.E.M.Zahidul Islam
Aircraft engine jet noise has been a problem since the beginnings of aviation with the introduction of jet-powered aircraft. The demand of aircraft for transport and combat purpose has largely increased in present times. The statistics has forecast that aviation is likely to grow over the next 30 years at an average rate of 4.25% per year in these aircraft; modern technologies are being used where the use of jet engines is inescapable. All types of engines are generating noise which has negative impact on environment as well as human being. Although individual aircraft has become quieter over the past 30 years but flight frequencies have increased. High speedy supersonic aircrafts are also using for military purposes. This paper offers basically an approach to study about engine jet noise, its sources, causes of jet noise, noise propagation, it’s impact and finally trying to find solution to reduce it. Though it is a vast field in aviation sector, this topic is discussed in brief.
