dc.description.abstract This thesis suggests a comprehensive examination of the financial and environmental implications of putting in place an alternative ship propulsion system based on fuel cells. Growing concerns about the environmental impact of traditional marine propulsion technologies necessitate the investigation of sustainable alternatives that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the ecological imprint of the maritime industry. The study looks at using fuel cell technology as a feasible replacement for ship propulsion and evaluates its benefits for the environment in terms of reduced carbon emissions, air pollution, and overall ecological impact. In addition to environmental considerations, the thesis examines the economic feasibility and cost-effectiveness of implementing fuel cell-based propulsion in the maritime sector. This includes a comprehensive cost study that considers initial costs, continuing costs, and potential long-term savings, all the while emphasizing how economically feasible it is to deploy this technology in light of the current regulatory frameworks and market conditions. The thesis also examines a cargo ship's ability to carry additional freight, which has a significant impact on the company's profitability. As the freight rate rises, fuel cell propulsion may prove to be economically advantageous. The study's findings provide significant new insights into the benefits of fuel cell propulsion systems for the environment and their economic feasibility for usage in maritime applications. The study aims to offer recommendations to industry stakeholders, shipbuilders, and policymakers in order to encourage the use of ecologically friendly propulsion systems and contribute to the ongoing discourse on sustainable practices in the maritime sector. en_US
